Lance Forsberg named MSU research farm manager

Lance Forsberg has been named farm manager of the Michigan State University Entomology and Plant Pathology Research Centers, located on the university’s south campus.

The 167-acre centers support MSU AgBioResearch and provide infrastructure for research on fruit trees, small fruits, vegetables and other specialty crops. Forsberg assumed the role in early March.

His responsibilities include managing daily operations, overseeing staff, maintaining research plots and equipment, and coordinating with researchers and MSU Extension educators. He will also handle budgets, capital improvement planning, purchasing and safety protocols.

“This is a wonderful opportunity to grow professionally and stay engaged with relevant issues that impact farmers globally,” Forsberg said. “I’m grateful to be a part of it.”

Forsberg has worked at MSU since 2011, most recently as a research technician and lab manager for applied nematologist Marisol Quintanilla. He contributed to projects examining parasitic nematodes and their impact on Michigan’s field, fruit and vegetable crops.

His experience includes coordinating pesticide use across facilities, conducting public presentations on research findings and supporting grant writing and hiring processes. He also previously worked in MSU’s potato breeding and pathology programs.

“Lance’s vast experience working with MSU researchers and managing large-scale research projects will be invaluable,” said associate director James Averill of MSU AgBioResearch.

For horticulture and greenhouse professionals, Forsberg’s appointment ensures ongoing support for research that addresses pest and disease pressures on specialty crops in Michigan and beyond.
