USDA ARS holds workshop on PFAS solutions for agriculture

The USDA’s Agricultural Research Service (ARS) announced outcomes from a recent workshop addressing the challenges posed by Per-and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in agricultural soils and waters. PFAS, also known as “forever chemicals,” have been increasingly found in the environment, leading to concerns for farmers and food systems.

The workshop, hosted by ARS and the University of Maine, brought together over 150 researchers, state partners, and subject matter experts to develop a research roadmap. The event focused on detecting PFAS contamination, understanding its movement through agricultural systems, and finding ways to mitigate its impact.

“The meeting’s focus on the gap between PFAS challenges and solutions has empowered and offered hope to ARS, its partners and sister agencies,” said David Knaebel, ARS senior management advisor.

In addition to PFAS detection and remediation strategies, discussions included standardizing data and managing municipal biosolids. Acting Assistant Administrator Marlen Eve noted that although PFAS is not directly caused by agriculture, producers need effective solutions to address contamination when it occurs.

Federal and stakeholder groups plan to move forward by creating documents to communicate research solutions and engage in partnerships with agricultural communities.
