USDA NASS 2023 Floriculture Crops Report reveals industry growth

The USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS) has published the 2023 Floriculture Crops report, revealing key insights into the industry’s performance.

Highlights

  • The total number of floriculture producers totaled 10,216, compared to 8,949 in 2022, according to the report. This figure is represents an increase of 1,267 (+14%) producer in the total number of floriculture producers.
  • The report also noted that the total value of sales across all floriculture crops totaled $6.69 billion, which was flat compared to 2022. For the 28 program states published, NASS indicated that the total value was $6.31 billion, a decrease of less than 1% from 2022.
  • Area used for production was 851 million square feet compared to 833 million square feet in 2022.
  • Of the 10 largest states, Florida had the highest sales, followed by California. Combined, Florida and California accounted for 33% of all sales in the United States.
  • The sales of annual bedding/garden plants represented the largest total in all the plant categories in 2023, according to the report.

Hired workers in 2023

NASS also noted that the number of operations with hired workers totaled 6,527 in 2023, which is an increase of 3% from the 2022 U.S total. NASS indicated that the average peak number of workers per operation was 16.4 nationally in 2023, which represents a decrease in the U.S. average number. In 2022, the U.S. average number was 17.7.
