A Sneak Peek at Spring Trials – Vol. 2
The countdown to the 2019 California Spring Trials continues, with just 38 days left until the event kicks off!
Last week, I shared a handful of some of the new introductions that will be on display along the coast this year. The breeding companies have clearly been hard at work perfecting their product offering. From flower color to habit to weather tolerance and disease resistance, these new introductions will make quite the presentation.
Today, I’d like to share some more sneak peeks into what the breeders have been working on. Keep in mind, this is just a sampling of what you’ll be seeing in California next month and out on the market next season.

Petunia ‘Amore King of Hearts’

King of Hearts joins the series for 2020. This gorgeous petunia boasts regal red and white blooms, with five perfect red hearts. This variety flowers early with loads of large blossoms that show good resistance to rain. It features a compact, mounded habit and is recommended for quarts, baskets and combos.
Ranunculus Bloomingdale II

Bloomingdale II sports large, frilly flowers and offers a compact habit that is ideal for quarts, gallons and mixed containers. Pelleted seed allows for streamlined production and early uniform flowering. And now, Bloomingdale II is available individually in six brilliant colors. Orange Shades is pictured.
Rex begonia Jurassic Jr.
Ball Ingenuity
The New Jurassic Jr. series features the same quality breeding and plant size as the Jurassic series, but with 40 percent smaller leaves to create a denser and stronger product. This means easier shipping with less breakage during delivery. The series is also trialed successfully for indoor houseplant use.
Calceolaria ‘Balloon Orange Tiger’

This new line is bred by Breier. All varieties have special flowers in an attractive color range. It showcases good branching and a long flowering time.
Veronica ‘Aspire Blue’

‘Aspire Blue’ presents long-blooming spikes of bright blue flowers. Its dense habit is perfect for containers, mixed plantings and edges. Foliage height is 11 inches with a 22-inch spread; flower height is 13 inches. It is hardy to Zones 4 through 8.

Imara XDR is bred to be the first impatiens with a high degree of resistance to downy mildew. With proven landscape performance, it fights back against disease, providing reliable flowering all season long.
