New & Novel Petunias By Jasmina Dolce

Petunias are one of the, if not the, most used annuals in gardens. They are relatively easy to grow, there are so many colors and sizes to choose from, and they are versatile in use — from landscape beds to baskets.

And the options just keep on coming. Breeders continue to develop new selections with interesting coloration and improved performance. With so many varieties available, growers, retailers, and even gardeners themselves, strive to differentiate themselves from others.

New, novel introductions certainly demand attention at all levels of the supply chain. The patterned and multicolored petunias seem to get immediate attention from any observer.

During my visit to the California Summer Trials and subsequent catalog browsing and video watching and website hopping, I’ve managed to take note on dozens of new petunia selections that will create a stunning garden presentation.

And today, I’ll share some of my favorites with you. These are just a few; I promise there are many, many more.

Do you grow and/or sell petunias? What are some of your favorites? Will any of the new 2021-2022 introductions find their way into your greenhouse this upcoming season?

Shoot me a message at jdolce@greatamericanpublish.com, and let me know. I’d love to hear from you!

SuperCal Premium petunia

‘SuperCal Premium Sunset Orange’
Sakata
Sakata has added new Premium SuperCals to its collection. They perform well mixed together and bloom spring through first frost. This new color will definitely drive sales in fall.

Trilogy petunia

‘Trilogy Silver Blotch’
American Takii
This new experimental selection presents a color that is unusual for a seed petunia. Trilogy petunias are known for their compact dome habit and prolific flowers, with less tangling and less daylength sensitivity.

Splash Dance petunia

‘Splash Dance Poppin’ Pink’
Danziger
Danziger introduced its series of speckled petunias, Splash Dance, last year. The series continues to grow with the addition of Poppin’ Pink, which boasts bright pink blooms with soft yellow speckles.

Blanket petunia

‘Blanket Silver Surprise’
Green Fuse Botanicals
This new petunia is a rock star in the landscape and in the heat. What really stands out is the coloration. One plant will exhibit white, pink, lavender and purple — even half and half of each color.

Crazytunia

‘Crazytunia Mayan Sunset’
Westhoff
The Crazytunia line is known for its novel colors and patterns, and it continues to expand with new introductions each year. Mayan Sunset has been getting a lot of attention at trials for its color and performance.

Fun House Potpourri petunia

‘Fun House Potpourri’
Syngenta Flowers
This unique flower color and pattern presents deep pinkish-red blooms with a bright yellow center. It has a great habit for a fun addition to hanging baskets — sure to be a social media favorite.
