Three New Varieties Take Honors At Farwest ShowSource: Oregon Association of Nurseries

The 2006 Farwest Show recently honored three plant introductions at the show’s first New Variety Showcase. Thirty-eight perennials, annuals, shrubs, trees and grasses were entered in the inaugural event that took place during the Farwest Show last month. The Showcase was co-sponsored by GPN, Lawn & Garden Retailer and Arysta LifeScience.

Weigela florida Verweig ‘My Monet’ from Proven Winners ColorChoice received top honors. Euphorbia ‘Blackbird Nothowlee’ from Skagit Gardens took second place and Ficus carica ‘Violetta’ received third place.

A panel of celebrity judges evaluated all entries. The judging criteria for the new varieties included:

  • Best presentation of the plant specimens supplied.
  • Most possible uses in the landscape or containers.
  • Best information provided to submission committee.
  • Most features for the garden.
  • Broadest possible geographic distribution.
  • Most unique compared to the species of other similar varieties.

Farwest organizers are planning another Showcase for 2007. Contact the Oregon Association of Nurseries at (503) 682-5089 for more information.
