N. Casertano Greenhouses & Farms Earns MPS-A Certification

N. Casertano Greenhouses & Farms in Cheshire, Connecticut, recently received MPS-A certification for its continuing sustainability efforts.

N. Casertano Greenhouses & Farm  is a third generation family owned and operated perennial grower that began operations in 1929. The company currently has approximately 20 acres indoor and 75 acres outdoor production.

Owner John Casertano has always been very concerned about the environment. This awareness led to the start of the cooperation with MPS (More Profitable Sustainability) on obtaining the MPS ABC certification in 2017.

A little over a year later, the MPS-A qualification was awarded after an independent initial audit, performed by MPS-ECAS, verified that the grower had met all of the requirements for of the certification. According to MPS, obtaining MPS-A after the initial year is a very impressive achievement which shows how Casertano’s is a frontrunner in the perennial segment on Sustainability.

Examples of sustainability principles which have been implemented are:

  • Integrated pest management; scouting, use of beneficial insects and softer crop protection agents
  • Capturing rainwater
  • Implementing recycling principles; separation of card board / plastic and organic waste
  • Awareness of water & energy use in the office and on the nursery

MPS develops and manages sustainability certificates for the international flowers and ornamentals industry and conducts certification through its sister organisation MPS-ECAS. The MPS-ABC certificate is recognized around the world as the international standard.
