New plant varieties for small spaces

Plant Development Services has announced its 2025 lineup of plant varieties, designed to meet growing demand for space-saving, low-maintenance and visually striking plants.

“We see our new varieties as more than just plants: they bring personality and purpose,” said Kip McConnell, vice president of business development.

The company’s research identified trends toward small-space gardening, container plants and privacy solutions, driven by consumer interest in practical and aesthetic plant selections.

Key introductions include ‘Autumn Kiss Encore’ azalea, featuring semi-double pink blooms that rebloom through three seasons, and Ilex ‘Nelliet’, a dense holly suited for privacy hedges.

For narrower spaces, Ilex ‘Golden Sky’ offers vibrant yellow foliage, while the compact ‘Mila’ pineapple combines colorful variegated leaves with miniature edible fruit.

These new releases will debut through the Southern Living Plant Collection, Sunset Plant Collection and Encore Azalea brands, with availability staggered between 2025 and 2026.
