Premier Tech Horticulture, a business unit of Premier Tech’s Horticulture and Agriculture Group, recently obtained the VeriFlora Certified Peatland Products certification. Administered by Scientific Certifications Systems (SCS), this certification program is recognized as the gold standard in sustainable development in the floriculture and horticulture industries.

According to Frédéric Caron, resource management supervisor at Premier Tech Horticulture, it stood to reason that the company would be labeled VeriFlora certified. “Earning the VeriFlora certification for the responsible management of peatlands is a natural outcome of the actions Premier Tech Horticulture, an industry leader in resource conservation, has been taking for a long time.”

VeriFlora, a sustainability certification program for fresh cut flowers and potted plants, also includes the annex for the horticultural peat moss sector in its standards, and is based on ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 standards. Certification requirements cover all aspects of production, from pre-harvest site preparation to peatland restoration to product quality control and employee work conditions.

Premier Tech Horticulture is among the first wave of Canadian companies to obtain this certification. The company hopes to see other Canadian companies follow suit so the industry remains proactive in its objectives for sustainable development.
