Property Damage Impacts Your Employees, Too — Not Just Your Business

{Sponsored} Any downtime — especially during peak season — can heavily impact your business’ bottom line. However, you have more to consider than just your business. Your employees also are affected by downtime caused by property damage, whether this is from a fire, a storm, vandalism or other causes.

When you’re waiting for repairs or replacements for damaged property, sometimes this means your employees can’t work. Many employees may not be able to absorb losses from downtime. This may mean they can’t pay for basics such as food or gas or utilities. To the extent you are able, it is good practice to protect your employees by minimizing this downtime; after all, that will positively impact your business.

If the equipment you use to move plants is damaged, this can mean that employees have a much harder time doing their jobs. They may make more trips if key equipment is damaged or in need of repair. They may have to push a cart by hand if the tractor is down. They may have to use a buddy system to carry heavy items if they don’t have another way to move them. In the long run, properly maintaining your equipment may make your operations more efficient and safe.

Hortica®, a brand of the Sentry Insurance Group, offers a unique plan for greenhouse growers. The Business Package Policy is unique. The policy can cover everything from fixtures to equipment to plants; even in the case of utility outages or equipment breakdowns, those plants can be covered. Liability claims resulting from injuries sustained by users of your products and property damage resulting from defective products may also be covered.

With Business Income Insurance, you’re covered if you lose profit because of a covered loss. For example, if a fire damages your greenhouses and that damage makes it impossible for you to grow a future crop, Business Income Insurance could be the difference between insolvency and a bright future. Particularly during periods of low unemployment when it is more difficult to adequately staff your business you may even want to consider increasing your Business Income insurance to continue the wages of employees displaced as a result of a covered Business Income loss. Consult with your agent for more details.

You should regularly discuss risk management with your insurance agent. The risk management process will help identify the type and level of coverage needed to protect your business. Choosing an insurance company that specializes in your type of business helps ensure that you will be adequately protected and you’ll end up with the right policy to protect your assets and employees and future.
