Ball Innovations Team Wins Award For PackagingSource: Ball Horticultural Co.

Ball’s new SoilWrap plantable container wins the Greener Package Award for its efforts to reduce packaging’s environmental footprint.

Ball Innovations has won a Greener Package Award for SoilWrap, a bio-based, plantable growing container. The Greener Package Awards competition recognizes innovations in five categories that significantly reduce packaging’s environmental footprint.

The bottomless pot design – winner in the Non-Food Primary Packaging category – is made from Mirel, a renewable, biodegradable and environmentally friendly material. SoilWrap was designed by Greg Trabka, sustainable horticulture specialist with Ball Innovations.

The plantable, printable design of SoilWrap helps address the massive landfill waste associated with horticultural plastic. According to Ball Innovations, it also saves time during transplanting by approximately 30 percent, because the need to remove the plant from its pot has been eliminated. SoilWrap also reduces transplant shock due to breakage during transplanting.
