Biotalys and AgroFresh partner on postharvest fungicide
Biotalys and AgroFresh have announced a partnership to develop sustainable biological fungicides aimed at reducing post-harvest produce loss caused by fungal spoilage.
According to the companies, approximately 14% of produce is lost between harvest and retail, much of it due to mold and rot. The new collaboration seeks to provide growers and suppliers with environmentally friendly tools to address this challenge and support crop quality through the supply chain.
Fungal decay is a leading cause of post-harvest spoilage in fresh produce, especially as fruits and vegetables lose their natural defenses after harvest. These pathogens thrive during storage and transit, making disease management critical for maintaining quality and reducing waste.
“Post-harvest freshness solutions are especially critical for high-value and highly perishable crops, where even small losses can result in major food waste and economic impact,” said Clint Lewis, chief executive officer at AgroFresh. “AgroFresh is proud to be partnering with Biotalys to develop sustainable biological fungicide solutions.”
The partnership will combine AgroFresh’s expertise in post-harvest freshness and global distribution with Biotalys’ protein-based biocontrol platform, which aims to reduce reliance on traditional chemical residues.
The global post-harvest fungicide market is valued at $300 million, highlighting the commercial potential for biological alternatives in a quality-driven supply chain.
