Horticulture groups oppose peat moss tariff proposal

AmericanHort and several industry associations have submitted five letters to Congress and the Trump administration opposing a proposed 25% tariff on Canadian goods, specifically sphagnum peat moss.

Peat moss is a key component in horticulture and agriculture, serving as a primary base for potting soil and growing media. It plays a crucial role in producing vegetables, fruits, ornamentals and mushrooms.

“Peat moss is a vital input to our members’ operations and the horticultural industry,” said Matt Mika, vice president of advocacy & government affairs at AmericanHort. “With production costs already high, imposing additional costs would further drive up input and operational expenses, placing a significant financial strain on our industry.”

The proposed tariff could increase production costs for greenhouse growers and farmers, potentially leading to higher consumer prices for plants and food products. Canada produces 85% of the sphagnum peat moss imported by the U.S., making American growers heavily reliant on these imports.

AmericanHort urged lawmakers to exclude peat moss from the tariffs or designate it as a “critical mineral,” which would reduce the tariff to 10%. The organization emphasized that access to peat-based products is essential for horticultural stability, economic competitiveness and food security.

The letters were sent to key congressional committees, president and vice president. They were signed by AmericanHort, the American Mushroom Institute, the International Fresh Produce Association, the National Association of Landscape Professionals and the National Christmas Tree Association.
