Have You Read GPN’s Latest CEA Supplement? By Jasmina Dolce

Are you growing agricultural products, such as fruits and vegetables, in a controlled environment? If so, I highly encourage you to check out GPN’s latest supplement, “Under Control: Tips for Controlled Environment Growing.”

This special publication debuted last year, and as the CEA market continues to grow and expand we decided to deliver even more information to growers to help them grow the best plants.

Microgreens continue to gain popularity at the consumer level. Neil Mattson, associate professor, and Jonathan Allred, Ph.D. student, at Cornell University, dive into some of the technical aspects in a research article on growing better microgreens.

Lighting plays a huge role in CEA production. In his article, Iowa State University’s Christopher Currey, gives his take on technological advancements made in horticultural lighting and how they contribute to the success of CEA.

As you’re well aware, too much humidity in the greenhouse is a problem. Dean Peterson walks us through the importance of growing dry, moving the air and warming plants before dehumidifying the greenhouse.

How can technology and automation assist in growing the best CEA crops? David Kuack shares Schuyler Greens’ story about how the Virginia grower has used new methods to expand production and reduce operational costs.

Plus, we share some interesting statistics in the market and preview some products that you may want to consider adding to your operation. If you’d like to read through the digital edition of “Under Control,” click here.

BrightFarms to Bring Packaged Salads to Select Walmart Stores

BrightFarms announced that its locally grown packaged salads will be available at select Walmart stores in Ohio, Pennsylvania and West Virginia. The salads are grown in BrightFarms’ Wilmington, Ohio greenhouse, which is a 120,000-square-foot facility that opened earlier this year and is the company’s fourth across the country. “The heart of our mission is to provide more of the population with access to fresh, delicious and nutrient-rich local produce,” said Paul Lightfoot, BrightFarms CEO. “By partnering with Walmart, the largest retail in the world, we’re able to provide a wider portion of consumers with year-round local produce that was grown by farmers in their own community.”

Schneider Electric and Scale Microgrid Solutions Announce Partnership

Schneider Electric, a global specialist in the digital transformation of energy management and automation, and Scale Microgrid Solutions, a technology company focused on developing sustainable on-site energy solutions for CEA facilities, announced an agreement to design, engineer and build a new microgrid for modern farming company Bowery Farming. The newly commissioned facility will be located in New Jersey. “Bowery has created a facility wherein crop production is already 100 times more efficient than traditional farmland, creating a greater need for reliable, efficient power,” said Ryan Goodman, CEO of Scale Microgrid Solutions.
