Sustainable roses win awards for regional performance

Star Roses and Plants has received two Master Awards from the American Rose Trials for Sustainability (A.R.T.S.) for its rose cultivars Blushing Drift and Ruby Red.

The A.R.T.S. program evaluates rose varieties under low-input conditions across six U.S. climate regions, focusing on disease resistance, flowering, foliage quality and plant habit. Master Awards are given to roses that receive Local Artist Awards in at least four regions.

Blushing Drift, a compact groundcover rose with double pink flowers and yellow centers, received recognition in five regions. Ruby Red, a dark red variety with a compact, floriferous habit, earned Local Artist Awards in four regions.

“All roses entered into A.R.T.S. are evaluated under low input conditions using data on the presence of disease and pests, flowering, foliage, plant form, growth habit and general health,” the organization stated.

To earn an award, roses must perform well without the aid of repeated fertilizer applications or chemical sprays. The trial process emphasizes sustainable growing practices, making the program particularly relevant to greenhouse and landscape professionals looking to meet rising consumer demand for low-maintenance, eco-conscious plants.

Star Roses and Plants, which breeds roses, edibles, perennials and woody plants, continues to emphasize sustainability and regional adaptability in its breeding programs.
