Heimos Greenhouses Patriarch Passes Away

Norwin Heimos, founder of N.G. Heimos Greenhouses and Millstadt Young Plants in Millstadt, Illinois, passed away on Feb. 18, 2021. He was 90.

Heimos was a leader, visionary and innovator in the horticulture industry for 70 years.

He started the company in the St. Louis area in 1951 growing and selling fruit and produce. He built his first greenhouse in 1955 and over the years the company evolved into a major player in the horticulture industry.

The Millstadt location was purchased in the mid-1980s and the company continues to expand at the location. The company also has several retail outlets in the St. Louis area.

In an interview with GPN’s Big Grower back in 2010, Heimos credited the success of the company on two things — quality and communication. “Those are what build relationships with our customers.”

He also was proud of the fact that three generations of the Heimos family were working in the business — six out of nine of his children and three grandchildren.

“That is part of our strength. We have family working in every part of the business,” Heimos told GPN.

Funeral services were scheduled to take place Feb. 27, in St. Louis. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to St. Catherine Laboure St. Vincent de Paul Society, 9750 Sappington Road, St. Louis, MO 63126 and Box Back Parkinson’s Rock Steady Boxing – STL – Fenton, 908 Claymark Drive, St. Louis, MO 63131.
