Loma Vista Nursery Accepting Internship Applications

The green industry is thriving at an unexpected rate – creating a demand for new graduates with horticultural experience. Loma Vista Nursery is ahead of the trend with an out-of-the-box internship curriculum that continues to train new professionals. Junior- and senior-level college students may now apply for the 2021 program. Applications are being received through Friday, Feb. 26, 2021.

Each mid-May through August, Loma Vista Nursery hires up to four interns from across the country who receive wages and college course credit for working up to 50 hours a week. In addition to horticulture, the internship provides experience in agriculture business and communications, as well as environmental sciences and sustainability management.

Internships begin with a rotation of every department at Loma Vista Nursery. Each intern is given the opportunity to select a specialty. Within their specialty, they work with department managers to solve problems and complete daily tasks.

“Our interns spend the summer in hands-on work with staff members from each team and they learn every aspect of our operation, including propagation, plant health, perennial production, nursery production, marketing and communications, and quality control,” Oestmann said. “We care about mentoring our interns, so they receive practical knowledge to complement their theoretical coursework and ultimately become informed and active members of our horticulture industry.”

Housing is provided by Loma Vista Nursery. Interns attend the annual Cultivate event to network with industry professionals. They also lead company initiatives and participate in community service projects and field trips. For more information, visit www.lomavistanursery.com/summer-internship-program
