Gardening trends show mixed growth for 2025
Interest in home gardening remains strong despite economic concerns, though participation may plateau in 2024, according to new research from Axiom, a Minneapolis-based marketing firm. While the overall time spent gardening and the number of people planning to expand their gardens in 2025 have decreased from 2024, younger generations are showing more interest.
Mike Reiber, founder and CEO of Axiom, noted, “This is the first year since we launched the Axiom Gardening Outlook Study that we’ve observed decreases in time spent gardening and plans to plant more and expand their gardens.” Despite these declines, 40% of respondents still plan to spend more money on gardening in 2025.
Key findings show significant growth among Gen Z and Gen Y gardeners. Both groups reported increases in time and money spent gardening, with 46.2% of Gen Z and 43.9% of Gen Y planning to spend more money next year.
The study also revealed Home Depot leads in garden supply purchases, but independent garden centers (IGCs) remain relevant, with many respondents citing IGCs for higher-quality plants and knowledgeable staff.
The study highlighted online sources such as websites and YouTube as key tools for home gardeners learning about new plants and products.
